| Hey, guys! Sorry for the late update. Break has been very busy for me. There will be no anime club meeting this week. I haven't had a chance to get the schedule change into the announcements to inform the other students of the date change. Last week we re-watched the first episode of Clannad, and we added two new titles to our list of manga reading. -Azumanga Daioh -+Anima -DNAngel -Case Closed/Detective Conan -Black Cat -Blue Dragon -Dr. Slump (NEW) -Yotsuba&! (NEW) Remember, you don't have to read each series and all of each title. Just one chapter of one series will do. I wanted to talk to you guys about making constructive criticism before break ended, but I didn't actually get around to it. I'll give you a short run-down here in the email updates. I will have the same notes at the next anime club meeting if you didn't get this email. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or ask me in person. -- Constructive criticism is applying your knowledge of the elements and principles of design in order to analyze the composition. I'm going to use one of my own art pieces as an example. http://zetsui101.deviantart.com/art/KHR-Chrome-Dokuro-72340643This is a sketch of Chrome Dokuro from the series "Katekyo Hitman Reborn!" that I drew during periods 3-6 a couple months ago. The set-up was very simple for this piece, a circular movement that directs the eye from one part of the picture to another. To convey this movement, I used the petals and pearl strands to act as a sort of frame around Chrome. I used the trident for the same effect. The eye should move in a circular motion with any piece. I also used the negative space to my advantage. Because I don't like to draw background, the white negative space served as an excellent backdrop for Chrome's petals and pearls. Emphasis is also important; without it, there'd be no specific subject matter in a picture. The eye would wander all over the place instead of starting from one point. The focal point here is Chrome, but I wanted to viewer to look at her face first rather than look at her skirt or trident. To emphasize this, I darkened her hair and eye patch so that they become easily noticeable to the eye, and the viewer will start there. I did make some mistakes in this picture, mostly in the character's costume. I'm not too familiar with her character, so I probably should have referenced her costume. I also didn't shade her face enough; it looks too flat. What kind of feeling do you get when you look at the picture? Happy? Sad? Excited? Being able to portray the emotion you want in your drawing is essential, because you need to make it obvious enough for the viewer to feel the same. The emotion in this piece is left up to interpretation. People who don't know her character very well might get a fun feeling; others who know her character very well might feel something else. It's a very relative perspective. Is there rhythm in the piece? Does the subject matter have a sort of beat to it? It should, seeing as I listened to music while I was drawing this. However, the beat of this drawing probably isn't as strong or as even as it could be. Why? Because I didn't have much fun drawing her. You have to be able to enjoy drawing to really improve in any aspect, including critiques. -- There's not much else here to critique: there's no colors to worry about since it's in black-&-white; not much in the way of form because it's a flat paper. It's a simple, to-the-point analysis of the picture. That's what your critiques should be. I should never see any of this: -It's so kawaii!!! -Kawaii desu desu ne! -Looks cool. :D -So hot! :DDD Or anything that looks or sounds remotely similar to those phrases. In the online community, lots of people post those and don't really make an impact on the artist. Yeah, it's cool, but why? What makes it 'so hot'? Your critiques should be three sentences long minimum. Pointing out aspects that you like and don't like is great feedback for artists. In fact, that's how they improve their work. Learning to give a proper critique inside and outside the web community is important. -- Manga Releases for Jan 2008: TokyoPop: -Slayers, Vol. 7 -Slayers, Vol. 8 -Arcana, Vol. 7 -Aria, Vol. 1 -B'TX, Vol. 14 -Cherry Juice, Vol, 2 -Chibi Vampire: The Novel, Vol. 4 -Chobits Art Book: Your Eyes Only, Vol. 1 -Chronicles of the Cursed Sword, Vol. 20 -Dazzle, Vol. 7 -Deja vu - Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter - Vol. 1 -Demon Flowers: Kuruizaki no Hana, Vol. 2 -Dragon Head, Vol. 9 -Elemental Gelade, Vol. 6 -Fantamir, Vol. 2 -Full Metal Panic! | Welcome to the December 17th update for Charter’s anime club, a.k.a. DESU. I’ve been really tempted to turn this next meeting into a starfish theme (too much Clannad lately), but there’s no time! Last week we watched the first episode of Clannad, and you all seemed to love it! Even though there were some parts that were difficult to understand… like Nagisa in the cherry blossoms, and the changing of Okazaki’s name. Most of those puns are Japanese, so even if there wasn’t another language exchange between the Japanese and English versions of the dialogue, the jokes wouldn’t have made much sense unless you were familiar with Japanese culture and language. The sub group who translates Clannad is German, and the German subs are then translated into English. Some of the jokes are lost in translation (pardon the terribly lame pun there… ), but the essence is still there. :) There are two new titles on our reading list! Instead of having those read by this net meeting, I’m giving you all of Christmas break to read them :D Which means that I’m going to add another title on just so there’s some more options. :) If you have any suggestions, have them ready by Thursday!! No Dragon Ball, Naruto, or BLEACH, please. Not only are they rather long, but they’re also very mainstream titles with enormous fanbases. This list is to expand past those fandoms to find manga that’s just as entertaining but more obscure. The list as of Dec. 13th, 2007: -------------------------------------- -Azumanga Daioh - +ANIMA -DNAngel -Case Closed/Detective Conan -Blue Dragon (NEW!) -Black Cat (NEW!) I had planned on giving you guys a spiel on cosplay, but I’ve found something that takes greater priority: giving constructive critiques! You’ll be critiquing the artwork of my peers or your own (I might throw of my skritches into the mix) as well as some clips from the first Clannad episode and (maybe) some clips from Hoshi no Koe ~Voices of a Distant Star~.. Part of drawing is to understand what goes into the composition, and constructive criticism is a good way to apply those elements and principles (the best way to actually use them in your own artwork). This month’s manga releases from VIZ Media, LLC. are as follows: - The Gentlemen’s Alliance+, vol. 4 (Arina Tanemura) - Wild Ones, vol. 1 (Kiyo Fujiwara) - Yurara, vol. 3 (Chika Shiomi) - Beauty Pop, vol. 6 (Kiyoko Arai) - Crimson Hero, vol. 7 (Mitsuba Takanashi) - Tail of the Moon, vol. 8 (Rinko Ueda) - Naruto, vol. 25-27 (Masashi Kishimoto) - Hoshin Engi, vol. 4 (Ryu Fujisaki) - Eyeshield 21, vol. 17 (Riichiro Inagaki and Yusuke Murata) - Pretty Face, vol. 3 (Yasushiro Kanu) - Buso Renkin, vol. 9 (Nobuhiro Watsuki) - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, vol. 9 (Hirohiko Araki) - Shonen Jump! January 2007 - Shojo Beat January 2007 No reviews this week. I haven’t had a chance to read anything new (well, except a few pages of Katekyo Hitman Reborn! And a little bit of The Gentlemen’s Alliance, vol. 4). | |

| Welcome to the third newsletter for DESU, better known as Charter’s Anime Club. I hope you’ve all had a good weekend. Mine’s been rough, which explains why this update is getting out to you so late. Last week we elected officers: Vice-President Lizann S. Secretary Anamaria E. Treasurers Brett G. and Lilly B. Thanks for volunteering, guys. It really takes the load off my shoulders :) I don’t know if there will be a meeting this Thursday. I will be out of town for personal reasons, and I don’t know if Lizann is able to run the meeting or not. I will let you know the final decision. I’ve almost finished putting the contest details together! So, get those pencils ready! The contest info and rules will be announced before Christmas break. *Hint: It’s a drawing contest* Reviews: Manga- Gamerz Heaven by Maki Murakami (Gravitation, Kanpai! Gravitation EX, Gravitation REMIXED) Rating: T (blood, fantasy violence, nudity) Genre: Action/Fantasy/Comedy Published by ADV Films Graphic Novels Summary: (from Anime News Network) Kaito Suzuki discovers a video game, Gamerz Heaven, that transports him to another different dimension. Upon arriving in the bizarre new world, Kaito discovers a cute little boy known as the "navigator," which he names Nata. Everyone in Gamerz Heaven is out to capture Nata, and Kaito can only beat the game by saving him. This will be difficult for Kaito, as Gamerz Heaven is only a beta version with a limited number of saves. Kaito soon discovers in that everything that happens in Gamerz Heaven affects the real world, and characters that die in the game are wiped from the memories of everyone in his dimension. Gamerz Heaven has four released volumes, two in English. Pros: Murakami’s classic sense of humor is consistent throughout the entire book. Spoofs of game content are guaranteed to leave any reader (gamer or not) laughing until his stomach hurts. Gamerz is drawn beautifully, a sign that Maki finally got the hang of her difficult drawing style after twelve volumes of Gravitation. There are irrisistable male characters for the female fans, and moe/sexy girls for male readers to enjoy. Cons: Murakami didn’t finish the series. ADV also dropped the series after volume two, and scans aren’t easy to come by. Hopefully VIZ Media, LLC. Or TokyoPop, Inc. will pick up Murakami’s work to finish where ADV left off. Chances of the series being continued are slim; Murakami’s latest projects include Kimi no Unaji ni Kanpai!, Gravitation EX, and more Gravitation REMIXED. Anime- Full Moon o Sagashite (Searching for Full Moon) by Arina Tanemura (ION, Time Stranger Kyoko, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Shinshi Doumei CROSS) Rating: K+ to T (slight violence, themes of death) Genre: Fantasy/Romance/Comedy/Drama Licensed by: NAS, Studio Deen (Japan), VIZ Media, LLC. (English) Summary: (from Anime News Network) Twelve-year-old Kouyama Mitsuki was devastated when she was diagnosed with a malignant tumor of the throat. She had made a promise to the boy she loves that she would one day become a singer, but her illness made singing impossible. To make matters even worse, two shinigami (gods of death), Takuto and Meroko, appeared to Mitsuki and informed her that she only had one year left to live. This news provides an even greater motivation for Mitsuki to fulfill her dreams, and with a little bit of divine intervention, she begins her quest to become a professional singer so she can be reunited with Eichi before time runs out. Pros: Arina Tanemura’s artwork is kept very nicely in Full Moon’s animation. Her stylistic Wide eyes and flowing hair seem just as lively in color as they do in the black-and-white original. Full Moon has great music, with ending and insert songs sung by Myco (Mitsukki’s voice actress) of Changin’ My Life as well as other members of the cast. The lyrics are sweet and unforgettable with catchy tunes to boot. Cons: The voice acting is terrible. Both the Japanese and English cast were not chosen well, resulting in voices that just don’t sound good together. Myco has a lovely singing voice, but a 20+-yr-old woman shouldn’t imitate a 12-yr-old as hard as she tried. Takuto’s voice actor is okay, but Meroko’s is unbearable. VIZ Media’s cast is no better, since the English and Japanese voices sound almost identical! The anime doesn’t stick to the manga story very well either. Characters in the anime have slightly different paths or an arc is morphed entirely. I prefer the manga over the anime, but some people like the anime more. It really depends on your experience with both. That’s all for now. I’m really tired, so I’m signing off. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Cecilia K. Anime Club Founder | |

| Hey guys! Welcome to the second update of the CCA anime club, also known as DESU. Older updates can be read here. At the last meeting we voted on titles to read before our next meeting on Nov. 29, 2007. You don't have to read all of the series before the next meeting, but I would like for you to have read at least one chapter of one of the series. The titles selected at last Thursday's meeting are: - +ANIMA - Case Closed - DNAngel - Azumanga Daioh All of all of these titles and their descriptions/summaries are availible on OneManga.com and MangaVolume.com chapter by chapter. If you are having trouble accessing these websites, please let me know by replying to this email. Last week's meeting started getting out of control. While I know not all of you are to blame, please understand that this club is run by myself and Mrs. Ketchum out of our personal time. I'd like to get somewhere with this club instead of trying to settle a mess with the time that I could have been using to do homework. A new policy that Mrs. Ketchum has given states: "If they get too rowdy, send them out of the classroom. It's part of their responsibility to be respectful, and in doing so they must behave properly." I really would not like to send anyone out of the club for being too loud or rowdy. My intent is not to exclude members left and right. I have a whole rant I could give to you, but I won't, because it wouldn't be professional of me to throw my opnions in your faces. In the last update, I mentioned a contest in the near future. Well, I'm getting together everything I'll need for it. :) The contest will officially be up and running after semester exams at the latest. Get your pencils ready! Speaking of pencils, please bring your own art supplies to club meetings. That includes paper, pencils, erasers, and any sort of coloring materials. Mrs. Ketchum cannot continue to lend out her supplies, as art supplies cost quite a bit of money. The supplies for the art classes are not for us to use on a whim, alright? I have printed copies of the permission forms sent out in the last email that many of your didn't get. I gave a handful to Celeste to pass to other members. If you have not received a blank permission slip, please see me before or after school in the art room. You can also catch me at lunch if you attend Mrs. Ketchum's 4th period art class; I eat in the room at the back. Even if your parents do not give permission for you to attend the feature showings, please bring the slip anyways. We need to have on record whether or not your parents gave you permission. To be honest, I'm lost as to what the club is going to do after the next meeting. I can only do so much, and the same applies to you guys; I know I'm not the only one with homework and extra-curricular activities to attend to. If you have any suggestions for club activities, please contact me at school or reply to this email. Thank you all for your participation in CCA's anime club :D In the next updates, I'll be giving two reviews: one for manga, one for anime. Included in these reviews will be age ratings, summaries (often taken from the DVD box or back of the books), and sometimes spoilers. Spoiler warnings will be given at the top of each review. Signed, ~*Zetsui Anime Club Founder - Mood:tired

| This is the first... sort-of newsletter for DESU (as senior Ryan has dubbed the anime club). Basically, I try to get email updates out to you guys if I don't have time to get on the LiveJournal to update. (Most updates will be on my LiveJournal page. I might as well use it for something, right?) I would rather use LiveJournal for updates rather than email because I don't have an email address from four people, so giving people the address to a LiveJournal page is easier than trying to get information out through email, and then to people who don't have an email address for me, etc. You don't have to give me your personal email account to receive updates. I'm not even using my personal email account (GMail is what I use to chat until I get around to intalling something else), so don't worry about that. On with the news! As you all know, this upcoming Thursday is parent-teacher conferences and early release for students. This means that there will NOT be an anime club meeting on Thursday, November 8th. There's already the strain on parents to pick up students on an early-release day, but anime club would end at an odd time that would make pick-up very difficult. I assume that some of you are in choir, also. If I remember correctly, there is a concert that afternoon that occurs during anime club that would also be difficult to get around. Next week's anime club meeting (November 15th) may feature a movie or an episode! I'm hunting around my own DVDs & video tapes as well as the rental stores. If you have any suggestions, please let me know BEFORE Monday, November 12th, as our teacher advisor Mrs. Ketchum needs to preview the material herself before the tape can even go in the VHS player. Remember, the title needs to be something that's easily accessible to me. So, if it's availible on the internet, please send me the link. On that note, attached to this email is a parental permission form. Most anime that will be shown is generally in the TVY7 to PG range, but occasionally there may be a PG-13 or TV14 film. To show anything above PG, I need signatures from your parent/s or legal guardian saying that it's okay for you to see the feature for that month. If you do not get the sheet signed, you will not be able to join in watching the feature. Please bring the signed sheet to me by November 13th. I will be in the art room before school, during middle school's 4th period (or my lunch), and after school for about 20 minutes. (Most of these rules are from Mrs. Ketchum. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask her.) Features may range from an anime episode/movie to a promo video for the latest Asian music artists (e.g. HYDE, Mihimaru GT, Miyavi, etc.) or for video games such as the origin of vocaloid Miku Hatsune (whose most recent promo video has a very catchy beat, I might add). Our last meeting was a drawing lesson that went over our time. While Mrs. Ketchum let members use art supplies for that first meeting, you need to bring your own art supplies to anime club meetings. Materials should include: -paper (bound or loose is fine) -pencil (I find that 2H and 4H leads are the best to work with) -eraser -coloring tools (These are optional. Occasionally I'll give a tutorial regarding color techniques with some other members who are especially skilled in different media. I will let you know in an update whether or not you will need these.) A couple of you were very insistent on presenting your artwork. You'll get a chance soon. Once I figure out how stable the club is and who is in the core group, there's word of a contest (>^ ^)> Just don't hold your breath waiting for it. (^/)(\^)U Thank you for joining Charter's first anime club! I hope this club will become a great success whie I'm still at Charter, and even after graduation. --Ceci la Lycoris Anime club founder | |

| It's Zetsui101, yes, the same zetsui from deviantART, MegaTokyo Forums, Mahora Academy forums, (I think) TokyoPop forums, etc. CHances are, if you've seen the screen name 'zetsui101,' then it was probably an account of mine.
The point of my getting an LJ account was not to go emo on everyone and spill into it like a diary. I'm using LJ as a sort of status bar, if you will, like a less-frequently updated Twitter account (which I have, by the way: http://www.twitter.com/zetsui101) for my art projects. At the moment, my works are as follows:
-KAMCAO (http://kamcao.deviantart.com/) illustrations [[2]]: 20% done; due October 1st -Naruto Fan book entry for SJ51: complete, mailing status is zero; due by February 2008 -Submission for Comix Magazine [[10-15 pages]]: 5% done, rough sketch for first page complete, script still in works; due December 1st
Those are just the big projects at the moment. I have smaller things in between, but theses are the most time-consuming I've got. I'll be opening commissions next month. Once I get all the information worked out, I'll post it here on LJ as well :)
Occasionally, I'll dump a few mp3s here, most likely from the Rock, Reggaeton, or Asian music genres, but only when I have access to a computer that has a connection better than dial-up (My home computer has only dial-up, whilst the office and school computers have highs-peed DSL).
For more information regarding commissions or prints (also soon to be available through deviantART), contact me by PM or note, or by my email, which is on my dA page. Have a good night/morning! I'm going to bed...
